Public art’s place within our environment

To some, public art is sculpture or statues. In reality, public art is so much more, from murals to iconic fountains, monuments and architectural installations.

Within a contemporary commercial or institutional context, public art acts as a cohesive element that binds a communal space. It’s a focal point that becomes part of the environment or landscape design, commissioned and created to inspire and enrich our daily lives.

Indoors or outdoors, temporary or permanent, at its best public art is magnificent and controversial, culturally progressive and affecting.

Landscape design, like architecture and interior design, operates on many levels. It’s as much about function as it is form. It’s as much about celebrating the natural and the man-made as it is developing a pleasing natural aesthetic. It’s as much about social and community sustainability as creating inviting, uplifting environments for individuals to enjoy and explore.

Mastering a rich palette

There are many facets to landscape design. It is fundamental to town and urban planning. Green infrastructure, public parks, gardens and public art art all fall within its broad spectrum. Plants, flowers, grass, ground cover, shrubs and trees form part of its rich palette, as do natural features such as rock formations, stonework, pools, fountains, screen walls, gazebos, benches and fences.

Equally, there are many practical elements to consider and balance in the development of an effective and functional outdoor environment: zoning, transport infrastructure, sewerage, views and existing buildings.
